Regardless of whether it’s digital or analogical, a game is a product that requires different skills. For example, to develop the game script it’s necessary a person who likes writing, a logical thinker to help create a coherent narrative, a designer to draw the elements, a person who likes technology and coding if you decide to make a digital game, and other specific skills related to the kind of game you choose to make.
When your team is formed, you can decide together on the type of the game: board game, outdoor game, card game, digital game, etc. If your group can’t easily choose one, you should take a vote. Or, if you’re in doubt between two or three types of games, make a list with the pros and cons of each one to make the decision. Remember: it’s very important to consider the others' opinions.
When you play a game, you are usually entertained and focused on the objectives and strategies to win, right? To make a game, it is also important to analyze what is behind it. Start to pay attention to the game structure, the progression and the positive and negative aspects from your point of view. Do the exercise to discover how this game was created. Watch the following video to see an example of this analysis.
The target audience is who you intend to reach. If you plan to create a game to your friends, for example, you'll probably know what they like and how to get them interested. But if you are creating a game to reach more people, you should do some research to find out the types of games they prefer. A way to discover your target's preferences is to create a survey. You can use a text editor and print some copies out, or use one of the free online apps, such as Google Forms.
You have a team, a type of game and a target audience chosen. Up to this point you were idealizing the game, but now it’s time to get real and think about what you can really do, taking the deadline you have into consideration.
Ask yourselves these questions: Do we have enough time considering the complexity? Do we have the tools and skills to make it? What can we adapt to simplify?
